A greeting and a soft question make it clear that you are looking, not demanding.

Pointing to the item keeps the Vietnamese question simple. Let the seller answer first, then repeat the amount if you want to confirm it.

Find a size that fits

Sizes vary, so ask to check measurements or try items on instead of trusting the label.

“Cỡ” and “size” are both used for size. “Bạn có cỡ lớn hơn không?” means “Do you have a larger size?” and “Có cỡ nhỏ hơn không?” asks for a smaller one. “Mặc thử được không ạ?” means “May I try it on?”

Useful colors include “đen” (black), “trắng” (white), “đỏ” (red), “xanh” (blue or green depending on the phrase), and “vàng” (yellow). If color matters, point to a sample and ask “Màu này gọi là gì ạ?”

Choose without pressure

This short exchange lets you ask for another option and take a moment before deciding.

Use these phrases at the counter. Keep your payment method visible and check the total on the screen or receipt.

Keep the tone comfortable

A purchase can be quick even when you are still learning. Simple words and a smile do more than a perfect accent.

“Tôi lấy món này” means “I will take this item.” If you decide not to buy, “Cảm ơn, tôi không lấy ạ” is a respectful way to decline. “Để tôi xem thêm” means “Let me look a little more.”

In everyday stores, “Cho tôi hỏi…” is a natural opener. In a more casual southern conversation you may hear “hông?” for “không?”; you can continue using the standard “không?” without sounding unnatural.
